{"id":444,"date":"2025-11-21T09:44:05","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T09:44:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/helvilux.lu\/?p=444"},"modified":"2025-11-25T19:12:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:12:26","slug":"historic-criminal-case-against-pride-organiser-sparks-outrage-in-hungary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helvilux.lu\/index.php\/2025\/11\/21\/historic-criminal-case-against-pride-organiser-sparks-outrage-in-hungary\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Criminal Case Against Pride Organiser Sparks Outrage in Hungary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>P\u00c9CS, Hungary (HELVILUX)\u2014 Human rights groups across Europe are sounding the alarm after Hungarian authorities launched an unprecedented criminal case against G\u00e9za Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel, a young Romani teacher, LGBTQI+ rights defender, and leader of the Diverse Youth Network, for organising a Pride march in P\u00e9cs.<br>The event, held on 4 October 2025, was the fifth Pride march outside Budapest and attracted thousands of participants. But just weeks later, on 28 October, Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel was summoned for interrogation and placed under criminal investigation for allegedly organising a <em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2025\/775839\/EPRS_BRI(2025)775839_EN.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2025\/775839\/EPRS_BRI(2025)775839_EN.pdf\">prohibited assembly<\/a>\u201d<\/em> , an offence that could carry up to one year in prison.<br>This is the first known case in EU history where a Pride organiser faces criminal prosecution simply for holding a peaceful LGBTQI+ demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><sup>A Rapid, Politically Charged Case<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>Civil society organisations in Hungary have condemned the proceedings as <\/sup><em><sup>\u201cpolitically motivated\u201d<\/sup><\/em><sup> and designed to intimidate minorities and silence dissent. They noted that while police procedures typically take nearly a year, authorities moved against Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel in a matter of weeks.<\/sup><br><sup><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><em>\u201cThe speed of this case speaks for itself,\u201d<\/em><\/mark><\/strong> the organisations said in a joint statement. <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><em>\u201cG\u00e9za has committed no act dangerous to society. On the contrary, he deserves recognition for organising the largest P\u00e9cs Pride to date.\u201d<\/em><\/mark><\/strong><\/sup><br><sup>During his interrogation, Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel openly affirmed that he organised the march but refused to accept that exercising a fundamental right constitutes a crime. He described the experience as a stark reminder of the increasing hostility facing intersecting minority groups in Hungary.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><sup>Far-Right Pressure and Legal Crackdown<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>Three complaints triggered the investigation, including submissions from well-known far-right figures such as Tam\u00e1s Gaudi-Nagy and Tam\u00e1s Varga of the Mi Haz\u00e1nk Movement. But Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel believes the authorities had already prepared to pursue action.<\/sup><br><sup>\u201cThis is about creating a deterrent example,\u201d he said, suggesting the government may seek to conclude the case before the April 2026 national elections.<\/sup><br><sup>The proceedings were made possible by sweeping amendments to Hungary\u2019s assembly laws passed in March and April 2025. These laws effectively ban Pride events, link LGBTQI+ gatherings to restrictive \u201cchild protection\u201d rules, and permit facial recognition surveillance of attendees. Organisers may face imprisonment, while participants risk heavy fines.<\/sup><br><sup>The legislation has been denounced by legal experts, MEPs, and human-rights organisations as a violation of EU law, the European Convention on Human Rights, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><sup>Selective Enforcement and Double Standards<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>Critics argue that freedom of assembly in Hungary is being applied selectively. While LGBTQI+ activists face bans, surveillance, and criminalisation, authorities continue to allow and often lightly supervise, annual gatherings of neo-Nazi and extremist groups, including the Day of Honour and \u201cFar-Right Fight Night.\u201d<\/sup><br><sup>Human rights advocates say this double standard undermines democratic values and raises serious concerns for minority communities, particularly LGBTQI+ people and Roma.<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><sup>A Pride Movement Rooted in Resistance<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>P\u00e9cs remains the only city outside Budapest to host an annual Pride event. The march is the culmination of the Freedom of My Identity human-rights festival, run by the Diverse Youth Network to celebrate intersecting identities and provide barrier-free access to marginalised groups.<\/sup><br><sup><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">\u201cAs a Romani human-rights activist, I know what it means when the state treats you as a threat,\u201d<\/mark><\/strong><\/em> Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel said. <strong><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">\u201cLGBTQI+ communities are becoming the next scapegoat. But Pride is about visibility about refusing to hide who we are.\u201d<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/sup><br><sup>This year\u2019s march saw confrontations with counter-protesters from far-right organisations including HVIM and CitizenGO. Police ultimately ordered them to fall back.<\/sup><br><sup>Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel rejects claims that Pride events violate Hungary\u2019s \u201cchild protection\u201d laws: \u201cIt\u2019s nonsense. If the government truly cared about children\u2019s well-being, they would address the collapsing education and healthcare systems, poverty, and corruption not target LGBTQI+ people.\u201d<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><sup>A Message to Europe<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>Buz\u00e1s-H\u00e1bel and his legal team, led by the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, plan to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights if needed.
