Littau/Lucerne (HELVILUX MEDIA) – A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured on Sunday afternoon after falling under a moving bus in the Lucerne district of Littau. The incident occurred at the “Rönnimoosrain” bus stop shortly after the teenager had exited the vehicle.
According to early findings, the girl stumbled while stepping off the bus and subsequently slipped beneath the rear section of the bus as it pulled away. Emergency services, including the 144 rescue team, responded immediately and transported her to hospital with significant injuries. The Lucerne Police have launched an investigation to clarify the precise sequence of events.
Helvilux Media contacted the Lucerne Police Department. Authorities confirmed that the bus driver involved in the incident is a Slovenian national. They emphasized that, at this stage, no conclusions can be drawn about fault or cause until the investigation is complete.
Public Debate on Driver Conduct and Integration
The accident has reignited an ongoing public debate in Switzerland about the training, patient level of driver, conduct, and integration of public-transport staff. Over recent months, commuters across various cantons have voiced concerns to Helvilux Media about inconsistent adherence to operating protocols, such as avoiding personal conversations, limiting distractions, patients and respecting strict safety guidelines.
Some passengers reported feeling unsafe when drivers, appear unfamiliar with local regulations, impatient behaviour or engage in behavior they consider unprofessional. Several commuters stressed that raising concerns is often difficult because criticism can be misinterpreted as discriminatory. “People just want safety and professionalism from anyone operating public transport.” one commuter told Helvilux.
One commuter also noted a perceived decline in professional courtesy over the years. “I’ve noticed changes recently; some drivers don’t seem as engaged or courteous as they used to be. In the past, we would thank the driver when leaving the bus, and they would acknowledge it. That kind of interaction has become much rarer” the passenger said.
Concerns Seen Beyond Switzerland
Similar discussions have emerged in other European countries. In Luxembourg, footage circulated online recently showing security staff engaging in casual conversation with a tram operator during service, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols.
Public-transport unions and government authorities across Europe have repeatedly stated that all drivers regardless of nationality are required to meet the same professional and safety standards. However, many passengers and advocacy groups are urging governments to strengthen oversight, training, and enforcement to prevent further accidents.
As the investigation in Lucerne continues, local officials are expected to review whether additional measures are necessary to reinforce safety procedures and rebuild public confidence.
